Soundings
AN INTEGRATED PROGRAM FOR EIGHTH GRADERS
Fostering Scholarship and a Love of Learning
Summer 2010
Welcome Soundings XI!
We are pleased that you will be a member of the Soundings learning community, and we are looking forward to working with you. Your enthusiasm and your efforts will make this a truly outstanding educational experience for us all. We are very excited about the coming year, and we hope you are, too. This will be your chance to show the world what eighth graders can do!
The goal of our learning community is to integrate the standards and concepts of the 8th grade Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts curricula in new and interesting ways, while also empowering you to take greater responsibility for your learning. The integration of the subjects will provide for a fun, exciting and challenging year.
Our year, as you know, will include the trip to Sandy Hill the week after school opens in September. This is a great class building experience for the entire eighth grade. We will be preparing for it in the opening days of school by sharing important information and by doing our own community building activities.
To get our year started, here is a short list of materials that you will need. Please note that our list is somewhat different from the regular 8th grade list.
1) Two boxes of tissues
2) School-issued combination lock
3) Scientific Calculator (TI34II)
4) A Flash Drive (1gig recommended) for file transfers and saving
5) At least one 2 inch binder with dividers.
6) Lined loose-leaf paper (college width)
7) Graph paper (one package)
8) One package of reinforcements for loose-leaf paper (optional)
9) One marble composition book for your reading journal
10) Pens and pencils
11) One (1) box of colored pencils (optional)
12) Free reading book with you every day starting with the first day of school
