Defining Standards

Standards define solid foundations on which a student’s education is based. By providing consistent targets for students, teachers, and parents, standards assist schools in measuring student achievement. Clearly defined, standards demonstrate what each student should know and be able to do in a core set of subjects. When properly done, aligned standards and assessments give us the ability to examine our performance and to see how much we are improving.

Standards are statements of what all students are expected to know and be able to do by the time they leave our educational system. They do not demonstrate the highest level of achievement; rather, they guarantee a consistent expectation of achievement across the district and focus on continuous improvement. Many students in the Radnor Township School District will excel beyond the levels indicated in the standards.

Benchmarks are descriptions of what students are expected to know and demonstrate at particular points of their educational experiences. They are really the skills that are acquired when the standard is applied. These skills are developed and enhanced as a student engages in the learning process.
