Welcome to the RTSD Transportation Department
Burt Blackburn, Director of Transportation
John Hearn, Asst. Director of Transportation
We
begin the 2006-2007 school year operating 48 bus routes, and nine mid-day runs. Our department includes
53 drivers, nine bus monitors, two mechanics and one mechanic's
assistant.
The Transportation Department uses 63
vehicles, including 34 full-size buses, 16 smaller buses (36 passenger),
eight wheelchair lift buses, four regular passenger vans, and one
wheelchair lift van. Since we operate 48 routes, our spare vehicles
include six full-size buses, five 36-passenger buses, one wheelchair lift bus, and three passenger vans. The average age of our fleet is
six
years, with the oldest vehicles being 1997 models.
We provide transportation services to 90
different schools and programs, including our five public schools. We
have more than 3,624 public and special education students assigned to
our buses. In addition, we also provide transportation service to
approximately 1,120 private school students. We service these 4,744 students with
847 different bus stop locations, traveling approximately
3,625 miles daily.
The most
important procedure initiated by the district was the School Bus
Idling Policy. Diesel exhaust from idling school buses can
accumulate in and around the vehicle and pose a health risk, both to
children and drivers. Additionally, idling busses waste fuel and
financial resources. When busses load or unload students, and when
they are waiting at the schools, all bus engines are now turned off.
Exceptions include conditions that compromise passenger safety such
as extreme weather conditions. Even when students are transported
off school grounds for field trips or extracurricular activities,
the no idling policy will remain in effect.
