Facilities Subcommittee ("Give Grass a Chance")

Subcommittee to Present Recommendations to RTSD Board Concerning “Give Grass a Chance Proposal” at Radnor Middle School

All meetings are at 7 p.m. in the administration building first-floor conference room unless otherwise noted.

Note: Lead Concerns

An article in the Inquirer earlier this week indicated that unacceptable levels of lead were found in two of 12  New Jersey artificial turf fields. RTSD operations director Leo Bernabei reports that the product that Sprint Turf (our contractor for the turf field at RHS) installs is polyethylene and does not contain lead.  The artificial turf that contained lead chromate is a nylon product and is produced by Astroturf.

PSU’s McNitt Tours Radnor Fields

RTSD’s Give Grass a Chance subcommittee invites renowned turf expert

This past October, the Radnor Township School District Board of School Directors voted to create a facilities subcommittee, nicknamed “Give Grass a Chance,” whose mission is to make recommendations to the district for design and maintenance of a grass playing field surface at Radnor Middle School. A secondary charge is to investigate a possible additional artificial turf surface elsewhere in the school district.

Thursday, Feb. 21, Dr. Andrew S. McNitt came to Radnor to evaluate conditions at RTSD fields. McNitt, Assistant Professor of Soil Science/Turfgrass, has been with the Pennsylvania State University for 21 years. He teaches turfgrass science courses at PSU and conducts research relating to athletic field surface characterization and golf green construction and maintenance. Click here for more.
