NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

IES Kicks off “Green” Fundraiser to Support Education

MySchoolLights.com Partners with IES to Raise Funds & Promote Energy Conservation

MySchoolLights.com, established to provide environmentally friendly fundraisers to schools and organizations, announced recently that Ithan Elementary School’s PTO is hosting a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) fundraiser.

Nearly 500 students in grades K-5 attend IES. If each student at the school replaces just one lamp at home with a CFL, IES will be collectively responsible for saving almost $2,800 in energy costs during the first year and almost $28,000 over the life of the lamps. The cost savings from using CFLs pay for the lamps in the first year of use.

April 29 School Board Recap

Pa. High School Graduation Initiative

In January 2008 the Pa. State Board of Education voted to advance regulations that establish state graduation requirements. The proposed requirements are a way for Pennsylvania to set high and uniform standards to ensure all graduating students are prepared for higher education or the knowledge-based workforce. These proposed requirements would apply to all schools starting with the graduating class of 2014. Students would be required to demonstrate proficiency in English, math, science and social studies by the time they graduated.

At the April 29 board meeting, district superintendent Dr. Sandy Mangano gave an overview of the initiative. Click here for her presentation.

Radnor Flips the Switch

This year, Radnor High School received a $373,000 Classrooms for the Future grant from the Pa. Department of Education. The equipment – 441 laptops, 18 mounted LCD projectors and 18 electronic whiteboards – was delivered in February. On Thursday, April 24, Director of Instructional Technology Joan Cusano “ flipped the switch” – introducing Classrooms for the Future, a state-funded technology integration initiative. RHS student Libby Linden-Chirlian demonstrates some of the new technology to school board member Pattie Booker.

Post Prom 2008: Chaperones Needed

Sat., May 31-Sun., June 1, Midnight-4 a.m.

Radnor High School, immediately following the senior prom

Attention parents of underclassmen: Join the seniors at Radnor’s 11th annual Drug and Alcohol Free Post Prom Party. Adult supervision is needed for the entire evening, and the kids prefer faculty, staff and non-senior parents (instead of their own mothers and fathers). It is a fun night, and time passes quickly. Come see all the exciting activities for the students, and get ideas for your own child’s post-prom extravaganza.

To participate or for more information, please contact Jackie Baver at baverhouse@comcast.net or 610-687-4509. Please make sure to include your name, email and phone number.

Las Vegas Comes To Radnor

Radnor High School parents are busy planning their seniors’ 11th annual post-prom party, held immediately after the senior prom May 31. This year’s theme: Welcome to Las Vegas. What happens in Radnor, stays in Radnor!

Students will be welcomed onto the “Strip” by an archway of balloons with the Las Vegas skyline in the background. Guests can visit Paris, the Venetian, the Sands, Treasure Island, House of Blues, and, of course, Elvis and the Chapel of Love. Games, live music, a fortune teller, celebrity impersonators and an abundance of food will be available for the more than 300 students and their guests to enjoy.

This annual RHS event has provided students with an alternative to individual, non-chaperoned parties for more than 10 years. Begun in 1998, the post-prom tradition was thought up by Radnor parents who worked to create an evening that kept students away from long drives to the beach and mountains, and unsupervised activities. All members of the senior class are invited, regardless of whether or not they attend the prom.

Radnor High School treats audiences… to the latest senior musical June 4-7

Sean Connery Hospital in Los Angles is the setting for this year’s senior musical, Paging Doctor Love. Audience members will be treated to an evening of music and laughter as they view firsthand the colorful characters at this dysfunctional hospital.

The show tells the story of the many doctors, nurses and patients at this crazy hospital. The music includes modern songs as Hannah Montana’s Best of Both Worlds, Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy, Gwen Stefani’s Sweet Escape and Ben Lee’s Catch My Disease, as well as such classic oldies as Bad Case of Loving You, He’s So Fine, U Can’t Touch This, and more. Act I Exceptions Granted by Pennsylvania Department of Education and Court of Common Pleas

On February 29, the school district received notification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education that all of its requests for exemptions from the 4.4% tax increase index have been granted for the 2008-09 budget year.

The areas and amounts for which exemptions have been granted are as follows:

School Construction (Grandfathered Debt)............ $321,361

Special Education Expenditures.......................... $622,371

Maintenance of Local Revenue or Average Instructional Expense per     Average Daily Membership.................................. $1,194,564

Health Care-Related Benefits............................... $1,546

Radnor has also been granted an exception from the Court of Common Pleas relating to a reduction in revenue due to reassessments in the amount of $340,741.

Altogether Radnor has been granted exceptions that would permit the school district to increase tax revenues $2,480,583 above the 4.4% index. However, since the approved preliminary budget will allow a tax increase of not more than 7%, the actual dollar amount that the district could tax beyond the 4.4% index is $2,139,842. The school board will be working on the budget over the next few months in an attempt to trim the projected 7% increase to a lower percentage.
