Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
What is PBIS?
PBIS is a systems approach to
discipline that emphasizes prevention, instruction on social skills, and
data-based decision-making to both reduce problem behavior and improve academic
performance.
PBIS emphasizes an instructional approach to discipline. Behavioral expectations are developed, taught directly and practiced just like academics. By identifying expectations the school creates:
1. Uniform instruction across multiple programs and settings within the school
2. Increased communication among staff members.
3. Increased communication with parents.
4. A curriculum design (integration of PBIS with academic and social curriculum)
Below is the Behavioral Matrix of Schoolwide Expectations.
What
is the Purpose of the Matrix?
The purpose is to define expected
behaviors for specific settings.
The Matrix creates the
"curriculum" that guides the teaching of the expected behaviors.
How was the Matrix created?
The Schoolwide Behavioral Matrix was
created based on the following guidelines:
*State definitions positively
*Use common and few words
*Show what the behavior "looks
like"
