Recorder Parent Letter

  • Dear Third Grade Families,

Welcome back to Wayne! As you may know, all third graders in the Radnor Township School District have the privilege of receiving recorder instruction during their general music class. Many students look forward with great excitement to the actual day when they will bring their recorders and books home with them for the first time. These practical instruments provide students an opportunity to develop motivation for increasing music reading skills and motor skills, which are important in learning to play other instruments later in their school experience.

For sanitary reasons, we request that you purchase a recorder for your child’s permanent possession. The recorder and book will be delivered to your child during their first few weeks of music.  If you already have a recorder for your child’s use, you are not required to purchase a new one. The cost of the recorder and book is $12.00. The accompanying method book is $6.00. Since we will use the book in every class (often writing in it), I am requesting that each student purchase a new book instead of recycling a sibling’s book. In addition, this year we are excited to include a digital subscription for interactive at-home practice, available only with the purchase of a book. As soon as possible, please send exact cash or checks payable to RTSD CLEARING FUND, and be sure to label the envelope with your child’s and homeroom teacher’s name! Change cannot be given for cash amounts over the cost.

We will be using the recorder in nearly every music class. With our rotating 5-day schedule, this may present a challenge, so I recommend keeping the recorders in their backpacks to both practice at home and have ready for music class at school.  If students do not bring their recorder, they may borrow one to use with finger positions ONLY and may not make contact with their mouths. Thank you for your cooperation.  We are going to have an exciting and challenging year in third grade music!

    Warmest regards,

    Tara Fields
