RTEA and RTSD Reach Contract Agreement

RTEA and RTSD Reach Three-Year Contract AgreementRadnor Township School District is pleased to announce that our School Board and the Radnor Township Education Association (RTEA) have reached an agreement on a new three-year contract for our teachers.
The RTEA contract was ratified by the group's membership and approved by the School Board on November 17."The members of the District Negotiating Team, Eric Zajac, Lisa Borowski, David Falcone and Susan Stern, worked hard to balance the desires of the full Board in tandem with the needs of the teachers, support staff and transportation staff," said Kimm Doherty, President of the School Board. "Additionally, we are grateful for the fine work and counsel of Todd Stitzel, Michelle Diekow and Dr. Kelly."
The agreement comes after recent meetings between the District Negotiating Team and the RTEA, the most recent occurring on November 9.
"While the contract negotiations were difficult at times, RTEA is happy to have reached an agreement with the school district," RTEA President Dave Wood said. "Our membership is excited that the distraction of negotiations has been removed, and we turn our full attention to what we truly love to do - educate the students of our community."
The agreement with the teachers follows approximately 10 months of negotiations, which began in January 2015 and included numerous formal and informal meetings and discussions between the negotiating teams. The teachers have been working under the terms of their previous contract.
"From the beginning, it has been the District Negotiating Team's goal to reach agreement on fair contracts which recognize our teachers, support staff and transportation staff for their contributions to our students and are reasonable to the Radnor taxpayers. We have clearly and consistently delivered that message to concerned parents and community residents," said Lisa Borowski, Vice President of the School Board and a member of the District Negotiating Team. "We are confident this agreement with RTEA respects and acknowledges the fine work of our teachers and is, most importantly, sustainable in the long term."
"I am thrilled that we've reached compromised resolutions," said Eric Zajac, a member of the School Board and Chair of the District Negotiating Team. "This is an agreement that places our students first while respecting the value that our community places on our staff members. The committee worked very hard within the parameters given to us by the full Board. We never lost sight of delivering a compensation package to our teachers, support staff and transportation staff that keeps Radnor competitive and respects the needs of all stakeholders."
- Payroll for teachers will increase 3.62% in the first year of the contract over the previous year’s payroll; 2.95% in the second year of the contract over the previous year’s payroll; and 3.37% in the third year of the contract over the previous year’s payroll.
- Teachers' contribution to healthcare will increase over the 3-year contract and, beginning in year two, the teachers' contribution will switch from a percentage of salary to a percentage of the district's healthcare premium. This means if healthcare premiums increase, teachers will share in this healthcare increase.
- "Off-scale" pay means a one-time compensation to teachers per contact year that is not part of future pay increases or retirement contributions. This compensation was included to address teachers at the top of the salary scale (Step 15), who in the last several years received less than 1% salary increases per year.
