Innovation Design Studio

  • Beginning in the 2021-22 school year, every student in grades K-5 in Radnor Township School District will benefit from a new Specials subject area called, "Innovation Design Studio," dedicated to Computer Science and hands-on and innovative instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

    This new elementary-wide subject area will complement the established Specials of Art, Music, Library, Physical Education, and Wellness to allow for a common experience in Computer Science and STEM for all students and to deliver Pennsylvania Computer Science and International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) learning standards.

    The K-5 Innovation Design Studio Special will run on a new six-day cycle alongside the other five Specials to enable all Specials to include the opportunity for "integration time" to bridge special area content with grade-level curriculum and programming.

Purpose of Innovation Design Studio

    • To establish a means to consistently and effectively implement PA Computer Science Standards in our elementary programming
    • To build and sustain Computer Science efficacy at the elementary level as programming expands in new and exciting ways
    • To complement the work being done in grades 6-12 on STEM-related course revisions, such as the RMS Technology Course, as well as established courses and programs such as Project Lead the Way at RHS
    • To fully utilize a shift to a six-day cycle at the elementary level, which is being put in place to:
      • Assist with elementary school sections/enrollment
      • Align with Multi-Tiered System of Support implementation

Program Focus

  • The new elementary K-5 Innovation Design Studio special focuses on Computer Science and Computational Thinking, STEM, and Character Dispositions. The program will be experiential and project-based to allow for:

    The ID Studio will be taught and experienced using a lens of design and dispositions.
