What's Happening in 5th-Grade?
Reading: Students will analyze themselves as readers, connect with other readers, and set goals to drive choices and growth over time. Readers will monitor and repair their understanding when meaning breaks down, will make connections to texts, to authors and to other readers. They will be able to have meaningful conversations with peers around complex texts, as well as compare texts of the same genre.
Writing: Students will be building a writing community, working on the writing process, and building seeds for future writing assignments.
Grade 5 students will build solid conceptual understanding through a focus on problem solving. The strategic, articulated sequence of topics are developed in depth to mastery following the singapore Mathmatics Problem Solving Framework. Students learn the "why" and the "how" thrpough instruction, hands-on activities and problem solving.
Students will be observing, recording and organizing in order to investigate the phenomenon of buoyancy during the unit of Sinking and Floating. They will create and analyze grpahs, and communicate results through writing and discussion.
Students will describe the ideals followed when creating the Declaration of Independence, and describe how British media and colonial media portrayed events leading to the Revolutionalry War. They will read, examine, comprehend, interpret, rewrite and discuss original source documents, and analyze how these documents affected the emergence and development of a new country.
