A Message from Dr. Boylan and Mrs. Esposito
Dear New and Returning Ithan Families,
It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year at Ithan Elementary School. It is always exciting to greet both our new and returning families at the start of the year. The strong partnership established between home and school makes Ithan a special place where collaboration and support are alive and well. Our teachers work to meet the needs of all students through differentiated teaching and learning within our classrooms with a goal toward individual student growth.
We are looking ahead to a smooth start to the school year and will welcome 484 students in kindergarten through fifth grades on September 8th. We look forward to seeing many parents at our Back-to-School events and our two Back to School nights.

Parent Handbook: Families are asked to review the Elementary School Parent Handbook which is available on the IES website.
Breakfast is offered each morning: Students can arrive for breakfast at 8:45 a.m. and must enter through the main office. Those arriving after 8:45 can pick up a grab and go breakfast to eat in the classroom.
Attendance: Teachers take attendance at 9:05 a.m. each day. Students arriving in the classroom after 9:05 are marked tardy and must report to the school office for a pass. It is very important that students arrive on time to have a smooth start to their school day.
Student absence: Please remember that an absence card or note MUST be sent to the OFFICE within THREE days of your child(ren)’s return to school or the absence will be recorded as unexcused and cannot be changed. Advance notice of absences is acceptable. You must send in a note regardless of alerting the Safe Arrival Line. (Press “3” when prompted on school’s main phone number.) Pennsylvania requirements are to send home warning letters and notices due to a child’s excessive absences and lateness’s outlining possible consequences. Please note that trips should be planned around the school calendar. According to school board policy, only one family trip of up to 5 days will be excused. All extended trips greater than 5 days and additional absences will be considered unexcused absences. The state law governs these rules, and each school is accountable for student attendance. Teachers are not required to provide make-up work for absences due to family trips.
Birthday Celebration Guidelines: As a result of healthy snack guidelines and allergy concerns, birthday treats may not be sent to school. Please see the Birthday Book Program information found on the library’s webpage.

Our goal is to continue the history of working collaboratively with students, families, and staff to provide a strong and comprehensive education program which enhances the lives of our students in the areas of social, academic, and personal growth to prepare them for the future they will face. We teach lessons on specific social skills through our Ithan Cares program teaching our students to: Cooperate, be Assertive, demonstrate Responsibility, be Empathetic and show Self-Control. As we continue the implementation of Responsive Classroom we will teach and reinforce the established expectations for students in the classrooms, cafetorium and at recess. We will continue to teach students how to work together as partners, so they know their role and are actively engaged in their learning.
We are excited about our new initiatives this school year. All students in grades K-5 will benefit from a new special subject area dedicated to Computer Science and hands-on and innovative instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This class is called Innovation Design Studio and will be taught by Mr. William Hirt.
We are also implementing Multi-Tier System of Support (MTSS). This block of time replaces our Intervention and Extension period and provides students with access to support focused to meet individual needs.
We look forward to working with you and your children this year. We have an open-door policy and always welcome your input. While we enjoy the quiet of summer, the halls of Ithan are more alive when your children are here. We know that working together we will have another fabulous year of learning and growing at Ithan Elementary!
