  • Information for Elementary Band - Summer

Hello everyone and happy summer!  I had the opportunity to meet with almost every student who signed up for band before the end of school and am very excited to start working together in the fall!

There are a few things that you should remember about the program, so I wanted to make sure that you had the information now.

In September, students will begin lessons during the school day and will be assigned to a lesson group.  It will be the student's responsibility to bring in materials on the lesson day.  A schedule for lessons will be sent home monthly.

Beginning in January, all band students will come to school early at 8:00 one day per week, in additional to the weekly group lesson.  This will be for a full band rehearsal with all of the instruments and musicians in each school's band.  The following are the days of the week that each school will meet at 8:00 A.M. for early morning rehearsals, starting in January:

    Wayne Elementary - Tuesdays
    Radnor Elementary - Wednesdays
    Ithan Elementary - Thursdays

A full schedule for early morning rehearsals will be sent home in December.

Please mark the following spring concert dates in your calendar.  The concert is at 7:00 P.M.

Ithan Elementary - Thursday, May 7th
Radnor Elementary - Wednesday, May 6th
Wayne Elementary - Monday, May 4th.

Below is a breakdown by instrument of what your child will need to start lessons in September.  We recommend renting instruments for the first year.  Please be advised that lower quality instruments found online at stores such as amazon that are under $300 are usually not of good enough quality to last through the year.  There are many vendors to rent from, and we recommend physically going to the store to rent instead of ordering online.  We also recommend that all students have a music stand at home to use to hold the music for practicing.

FLUTE - flute to rent or purchase. Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Flute.

OBOE - all oboe students will need to rent or purchase an instrument, and will need two medium soft wooden oboe reeds and a reed case (not the little plastic tube that the reeds come in).  The reed case is extremely important.  If reeds are not stored properly, they can crack or develop mold and will need to be replaced.  The book is Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Oboe.

BASSOON - bassoon students will rent from Radnor School District.  Your child will be given an instrument to take home for practice, and one to use in school for lessons.  The cost is $120 for both instruments and you will be given an invoice in September. All Bassoon students will need two medium soft wooden bassoon reeds and a reed case (not the little plastic tube that the reeds come in).  The reed case is extremely important.  If reeds are not stored properly, they can crack or develop mold and will need to be replaced.  The book is Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Bassoon.

CLARINET - clarinet to rent or purchase. Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Clarinet.

FRENCH HORN - french students will rent from Radnor School District.  Your child will be given an instrument to take home for practice, and one to use in school for lessons.  The cost is $120 for both instruments and you will be given an invoice in September.  The book is Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for French Horn.

TRUMPET - trumpet to rent or purchase.  Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Cornet.

TROMBONE - trombone to rent or purchase.  Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Trombone.

BARITONE - baritone students will rent from Radnor School District.  Your child will be given an instrument to take home for practice, and one to use in school for lessons.  The cost is $120 for both instruments and you will be given an invoice in September.  The book is Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Baritone B.C. (bass clef).

TUBA - tuba students will rent from Radnor School District.  Your child will be given an instrument to take home for practice, and one to use in school for lessons.  The cost is $120 for both instruments and you will be given an invoice in September.  The book is Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Tuba.

PERCUSSION - percussion students will need a bell kit and practice pad for home practice.  This comes as a percussion kit.  You are more than welcome to also rent or purchase a snare drum, but students need to have the bell kit for practice, and the bell kit package comes standard with a set of bells and a practice pad instead of a full snare drum.  Students will need two books: Student Instrumental Course, Book 1 for Mallet Percussion AND Breeze Easy Method, Book 1 for Drums.

As always, all of this information will be available on my teacher webpage.  Thank you and have a great summer!

  • Welcome to Elementary Band 2019-2020

Hello Future Wayne Elementary Band Parents!

For those of you that don't know me, my name is Sal Scinto and I am the band director for the three elementary schools in Radnor Township.  You are receiving this email because you and your child have signed up for band in 5th grade!  I am excited to work with all of these fine young musicians in September.

I am currently working through my list at each school to meet with each student independently in order to let them try their choices and settle on an instrument for next year.  I still have some students yet to see.  After I meet with them, they will receive a form from me with their name, instrument, and what book they need for next year.  It will also have some information about purchasing/renting an instrument.

At the end of the week, look for another email from me that will be specific about each instrument and what will be needed for next year.

At the bottom of this email, below my signature, are links to my pages for IES, WES, and RES.  Every email that will be sent home will also be posted to my webpage for each school, so that you can access it at any time over the summer.

Thank you for your support of the arts in RTSD, and I look forward to working with everyone next year!
