What's Happening in Second Grade?
Second graders are actively using several reading comprehension strategies as they grow as readers. Predicting, using schema, making connections, and visualizing have all been used to build the foundation for new growth as we start to think about character traits, and inferring.
Young writers have been using descriptive language to enliven their narratives. Students have been engaged in writing personal narratives: "true and about you" stories focusing on a small moment in their lives.
Our mathematicians have been using addition and subtraction strategies to grasp the concept of bar modeling to represent larger numbers in math. Students have been challenged to write their own bar model stories, and think deeply about how they use numbers in everyday life. Multiplication is coming soon!
In social studies, we are finishing a unit on communities, which includes urban, suburban, and rural areas. Students also were introduced to the Pennsylvania state flag.
