What's Happening in 1st-Grade?
Language Arts: Students will build a reading and writing life among a community of other readers and writers. We will explore the difference between Fiction and Non-fiction text and practice decoding and comprehension strategies. We will practice predicting, wondering, asking questions, analyzing characters, and retelling stories. We will also hone our Writing craft by developing our writing skills and writing stories with a beginning, middle, and end, and lots of details.
Math in Focus: Singapore Math by Marshall Cavendish embodies the world-class Singapore pedagogy, methodology, and instruction materials with United States enhancements to align with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
Math in Focus consistently employs a concrete-pictorial-abstract progression. Clear and engaging visuals that present concepts and model solutions allow all students to gain a strong conceptual understanding. In first grade, we will be covering Addition and Subtraction of numbers up to 120 by the end of the year. We will also explore patterns, measurement, geometry, and data and graph analysis.
Social Studies: We are learning about getting along with each other in school. We are meeting the First Grade Experts, Responsible Ryan, Respectful Rachel, Ready to Learn Robert, and Really Safe Rita. We are becoming First Grade Experts ourselves as we learn about the rules that make our school a safe and fun place to be! We also learn map skills and learn about some famous Americans such as Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington and Abe Lincoln.
Science: We have three main Science units in First Grade: We study the Weather, Solids and Liquids, and the Lifecycle of a Butterfly.
