Mab Rongione Named Winner in Mouthful Monologue Festival


The Radnor High School Senior is One of 18 Student-Writers Whose Monologue Will Be Performed by a Professional Actor in 7 Performances Beginning Feb. 28


Mab Rongione Inspired by an assignment in Radnor High School's Advanced Acting course, senior Mab Rongione wrote an original monologue exploring the theme of gun violence in schools. Little did she know, her passion project would earn a place on stage as part of a Philadelphia Young Playwrights (PYP) event.

Mab submitted her original monologue, "What I Wouldn't Do," to the PYP Mouthful Monologue Festival in December. Recently, Mab learned her piece was one of 18 selected from a pool of more than 600 entries and will be performed on stage for public audiences as part of the 2019 festival kicking off February 28.

"Our Final Committee was really excited about [Mab's] monologue," Director of Education and Programming for the PYP Ms. Mindy Early said. "[It] is incredibly timely...and incredibly powerful.”

"[School shootings] are something that I know my peers think about," Mab said. "I think a lot kids think: 'What would I do if it happened?'"

From February 28 through March 9, the Mouthful Monologue Festival, a "pay what you can" production, is a collaboration between the student writers and theater professionals who direct and perform the monologues. For audiences and for the students alike, the festival is a rare chance to engage with people across a full spectrum of identities and backgrounds.

The 2019 Mouthful Monologue Festival will include seven public performances at the Louis Bluver Theater at the Drake (302 S. Hicks Street, Philadelphia, PA). Reservations are required and can be made online or by phone at 215-665-9226.
