May 29, 2019

Radnor High School Principal Dan Bechtold Named RTSD's New Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning

Mr. Bechtold Will Replace Dr. Maureen McQuiggan, Who Will Retire This Summer

Dan Bechtold Dan Bechtold, the Principal of Radnor High School since July 2015, was appointed the district's new Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning by the RTSD School Board at its monthly meeting on May 28. Mr. Bechtold, who served as Assistant Principal of RHS for four years prior to becoming Principal, will take over for Dr. Maureen McQuiggan, who is retiring this summer after 14 years of service to RTSD.

"We are fortunate to have an outstanding candidate in our district who we are confident can carry on the exemplary work of Dr. McQuiggan," Superintendent Kenneth E. Batchelor said. "Mr. Bechtold led our high school to lofty heights and we look forward to utilizing his skills on a broader level to benefit both our high and middle schools."

During Mr. Bechtold's leadership of RHS, the school rose to third in Pennsylvania in U.S. News and World Report's High School Rankings, while moving up more than 120 spots nationally in one year. Ninety-nine percent of the Class of 2018 graduated in four years; the average SAT score for the Class of 2018 was 1320; and 84% of students who took the 1,068 Advanced Placement assessments in 2017-18 received a score of 3 or above. Radnor High School was also named a 2017-19 Apple Distinguished School and was one of just 133 high schools in the country to be named a Project Lead the Way Distinguished School in 2018. Mr. Bechtold also oversaw the installation of the school's Wall of Honor in 2016; helped facilitate the renovation of the school's courtyard in 2017; and was co-chair of the district's Sleep and School Start Time Committee.

Dr. McQuiggan retires from public education after serving Radnor students, families, and staff members since 2005. In addition to her role as Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning/Director of Secondary Education, Dr. McQuiggan also served as a literacy coach and assistant principal at RHS as well as the district's literacy coordinator. As the Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning, Dr. McQuiggan worked closely with Mr. Bechtold and Radnor Middle School administration to provide leadership and oversight of the high and middle schools as well as K-12 oversight of curriculum, instruction and assessment in the subject areas of Library and English Language Development. She also oversaw the development of the district's 2018-2021 Comprehensive Plan and led the review and implementation of 6-12 Instructional Technology. Dr. McQuiggan was also instrumental in developing and facilitating professional development; instituting and overseeing a curriculum review cycle; supporting and guiding faculty members through the implementation of major district initiatives; and in her role as the administrative liasion to the School Board's Curriculum Committee.

"Dr. McQuiggan's positive impact on Radnor cannot be overstated," Mr. Batchelor said. "Her commitment to improving the learning experience for students, as well as the instructional experience for teachers, has been remarkable. Her genuine work with parents on various projects has fostered a sense of collaboration and teamwork. She will be missed, but we benefit from a worthy successor in Mr. Bechtold."

Mr. Bechtold joined RTSD in 2011 from his position at Donegal High School where he was a member of the Social Studies Department for 7 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in Secondary Social Studies Education from Elizabethtown College, a master's degree in Educational Development and Strategies from Wilkes University and a post-master's certificate in Educational Leadership from Millersville University.
