Restructurings in Special Education and Technology Departments Enhance Supports to Students, Staff and Families

Special Counsel Also Joins RTSD; All Personnel Moves Are Budget Neutral

As a result of personnel restructurings, Superintendent Kenneth Batchelor announced at the June 23 School Board meeting the establishment of four positions to bolster services to students, staff and parents: a Special Education Coordinator, an Assistant Director of Instructional Technology, an Assistant Director of Infrastructure Technology, and a Special Counsel to Radnor Township School District.

All positions were approved by the Board and are budget neutral as the result of eliminating previously contracted services.

The Special Education Coordinator will focus on providing Individualized Education Plan (IEP) writing support, inclusion practices and strategies, and instructional support to meet students’ academic, social, and organizational needs. This position is a teacher-on-assignment position that will provide coaching to all teachers on an on-going basis and support RTSD initiatives as well as any mandated initiatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

"The Special Education Department has worked diligently over the years to improve the supports and services provided to all of our students," said Jenny Le Sage, RTSD Director of Special Education. "This year, we focused on direct programming for our special education students, including increasing the number and type of research-based programs offered K-1 and providing hands-on training for our teachers in these programs. We are excited to establish this new position to further support our students."

In the Technology Department, now led by RTSD's new Director of Technology Innovation and Instructional Design Dr. Scott Hand, who took over for the retiring Dr. Byron McCook, the district introduced a restructuring with a three-prong focus on Instruction, Network and Systems, and Client Support.

Ms. Virginia Glatzer was appointed the Assistant Director of Instructional Technology and Mr. Chris Augustine was appointed the Assistant Director of Infrastructure Technology. Ms. Glazer previously provided technology support to Radnor teachers in a contractual position. Mr. Augustine transitions into an administrative position from his previous role in RTSD as the Assistant to the Director of Technology.

Lastly, Tracey Waldmann was appointed Special Counsel to RTSD to assist administrators and teachers in understanding legal requirements within the environment of education and to ensure staff is fully trained on meeting all students’ needs throughout the school day. The Special Counsel will also remain current with any new requirements or obligations and help ensure compliance with all state and federal mandates. Ms. Waldmann's anticipated start date is July 20.

"By bringing in our own legal counsel, we have afforded many members of our staff the opportunity to receive firsthand knowledge of what we need to provide to our students daily," said Mr. Batchelor.
