Valley Forge Military Academy Details Proposed Charter School at March 24 Public Hearing
Representatives from Valley Forge Military Academy presented the details of a proposal to open a VFMA charter school in Radnor Township to the RTSD School Board on March 24. The public hearing initiated a public process of review and discussion to be undertaken by the Board pursuant to Section 1717.A(d) of the “Charter School Law” (click here), Board Policy 140 (click here), and the Sunshine Act.
The hearing was streamed live on the district's YouTube channel and can be viewed here. The VFMA presentation can be viewed here. At the end of the presentation, the meeting was recessed by the Board to allow for more time to review the application and presentation, and formulate related questions and comments. Per the Charter School Law, at least 45 days must transpire between the first public hearing and the final decision of the Board on the charter application. The law also states that no later than 75 days after the first public hearing on the application shall the Board grant or deny the application.
The date of the reconvened meeting will be made available as soon as it is established.
Board President Susan Stern clarified during the March 24 meeting that the proceeding was not to be adversarial, but rather an opportunity for the Board and administration to learn about VFMA’s application. She added that the Board and administration are entering into this process with an open mind and a mind toward gathering information, and that no decisions have been made.
The district will continue to provide updates moving forward in this process.
