Students Advance to State National History Day Competition

Radnor Students Advance to State National History Day Competition


Gaby Heberline with National History Day projectRadnor Township School District students recently competed in the Southeast PA National History Day Regional Contest. Ten projects, one from Radnor High School and nine from Radnor Middle School, placed in the top three in their category and are eligible to compete in the virtual state competition from May 7-9.

All projects centered around this year's National History Day theme, "Communication in History: The Key to Understanding." 

The students that advanced to the state round are:

  • Gaby Heberling - First Place, Senior Individual Exhibit, "The Making of a Modern President: How FDR's Fireside Chats Changed the Relationship Between the Common Man and America's Chief Executive"
  • Jack Wible - First Place, Junior Individual Exhibit, "Navajo Code: The Turning Point in World War II"
  • Ryan Ertel, Elayna Farnelli and Mason Hippler - Second Place, Junior Group Exhibit, "The Ideas of Communication in the 'I Have a Dream' Speech"
  • Allison Long - Second Place, Junior Individual Exhibit, "Malcolm X: Introducting a New Voice to the Civil Rights Movement"
  • Meredith Gelles - First Place, Junior Individual Website, "Communicating the Need for Play: Smith Memorial Playground"
  • Ashley Kuntz - Second Place, Junior Individual Website, "'Houston, We've Had a Problem': The Miscommunication and Oxygen Tank Explosion of Apollo 13"
  • Chase Carlton - Third Place, Junior Individual Website, "The Eye of the Storm: Exploring Communication Improvements after 9/11"
  • Anjali Padmawar - Second Place, Junior Individual Documentary, "Polio Drives: From Hospitals to Homes"
  • Tate Marcinkoski - Third Place, Junior Individual Documentary, "Considering MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail"
  • Emily Decker - Third Place, Junior/Senior Performance, "Emmett Tilla and the Press"

National History Day is a year-long educational program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, websites and research papers based on research related to the annual theme. These projects are then evaluated at local, state, and national competitions.
