In recent years, Radnor Elementary School 4th-grade teacher Camille Baker has connected a unit on pancake vocabulary, history, tradition and geography with an end-of-year celebration in which students enjoy pancakes with their parents, discuss what they've learned and make a donation to a charity of their choice. The students collect the funds by performing extra chores around their homes.
This year, the students raised a little more than $1,000 for Support Homeless Veterans (SHV), a Philadelphia non-profit that "gives each veteran a sense of purpose and ownership" by offering "supported permanent group housing with on-call clinical case management and peer support assistance."
The class celebrated its effort, and shared a meal with family and friends, on June 11. Read more
