August 11, 2020
The School Board hosted a special Board meeting on Aug. 11 to provide an update on our plans for reopening Radnor. We asked Dr. David Rubin, Director of Policy Lab and Director of Population Health Innovation at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Dr. P.J. Brennan, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of the University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, Board Certified in Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine, to join us for the beginning of our meeting.
Both doctors have been advising Delaware County school districts, local health departments, and Pennsylvania Covid-19 task forces. They encouraged us to consider beginning the school year fully remote for perhaps one month based on several current and emerging Delaware County Covid-19 conditions, including but not limited to weekly case incidence, testing positivity rates, and potential Labor Day holiday activity.
To further review these options and evaluate our current decision for the start of the school year, we decided to schedule a special Board meeting on Tuesday, August 18 at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The meeting will be live-streamed on YouTube. We are very mindful of staff and families wanting more definitive plans, but ask for your continued patience as we are at the mercy of continuously changing conditions beyond our control.
Lastly, also approved at our August 11 meeting was a revision to our state-required 2020-21 School Health and Safety Plan. The plan will now require face masks to be worn by students throughout the school day, including when in classrooms. Our first iteration of the plan, which was based on an initial order from the PA Department of Health and guidelines from CDC, allowed for students to take off their face masks and instead wear a face shield while in their classrooms. We received significant community feedback requesting an amendment to this protocol and have adjusted our plan to remove the face shield option. We will continue to tweak the plan as circumstances require.
